01/ Overview
The route
The trail has something to suit all tastes: lakeside sections and meadows, woodlands and craggy cliffs. The highlights of the hike include the three waterfalls, the incredible colour of Lake Brienz and a historic hotel (Grand Hotel Giessbach) resembling a fairy-tale castle.
From the Bönigen, See bus stop, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads out of the village and soon into an alternating landscape of forest, meadows and lakeshore. Lake Brienz repeatedly comes into view between the trees; at Iseltwald, the water lies directly beside the route. The trail then climbs again. With constant ups and downs, it reaches the highest point of the hike near Litschgiburg at around 800 m.
The second part remains characterised by wooded slopes and open sections. Near the Giessbachfälle, a viewpoint looks out over the Giessbach as it flows towards Lake Brienz. The route then descends again and continues towards Brienz. After 19 km and a good six hours, the hike ends in Brienz; the Brienz BRB stop is just a few steps from the finish. The many short counter-climbs add up to around 760 metres of ascent, turning otherwise easy paths into a demanding full-day hike.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
