01/ Overview
The route
This hike starts at Untergrenchenberg and explores the Montoz ridge. The summit is a hilly plateau, surrounded by a broad forest belt. The views from the Montoz extend all the way to the Alps, if the weather is clear.
The hike starts in the Jura highlands at the Grenchen, Unterer Grenchenberg bus stop. A short initial climb leads to the highest point at around 1,300 m. The trail then crosses the Grenchenbergpass and follows yellow-marked hiking paths through alternating Jura pastures and forest. Restaurant Harzer is reached early in the route.
The middle section remains on the Jura heights, continuing towards Montoz in a steady succession of ascents and descents. Cabane La Rochette lies directly on the trail. Open pastures lend this section a sense of space, while enclosed stretches of forest provide a quieter atmosphere in between.
After Hotel-Restaurant La Werdtberg, the long descent begins. The route leads down via Sous le Mont to Tavannes, where the railway station is just a few steps from the end point. The 17-kilometre hike, with around 360 metres of ascent and 900 metres of descent, takes just under five hours.
