01/ Overview
The route
On peaceful winter paths, this hike connects the Walser villages of the Rheinwald – on the sunny side of the high valley, the route takes you from Splügen to Hinterrhein. Imposing mountain peaks, wide cross-country ski areas, the rushing Hinterrhein river and ancient trading history and building culture characterise the unspoilt winter hike.
The winter hike through the Rheinwald begins at the Splügen, Dorf bus stop. From the village, the route leads out onto open meadows and pastures. The ascent is gentle at first; a wooded section adds variety before Medels is reached. There, the trail passes close to the Reformed church, which is protected as a cantonal monument.
The route continues through the valley in a steady succession of ascents and descents, with open terrain predominating. After just over two hours, the houses of Nufenen come into view. The route passes the Reformed church in the centre of the village; it has served as a preaching church since the Reformation around 1530, and a stained-glass window in the chancel bears a line from a hymn by Martin Luther.
Beyond Nufenen, the winter route climbs once more. Shortly before the destination, it reaches its highest point at around 1,650 m. It then descends through open terrain to the first houses of Hinterrhein. After ten kilometres and just over three hours, the winter hike ends near the Hinterrhein, Dorf bus stop.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
