Winterwanderweg Thalkirch

This route at the far end of the Safien Valley leads through a pine forest and past the Wanna compensating reservoir, Walser houses and Alpine huts to «z’Hinderst». Hikers are surrounded by restful silence and, if they’re quiet enough, they can watch deer, chamois or even ibexes along the way.

The roughly six-kilometre winter hike begins directly at the Thalkirch, Turrahus bus stop. After a short distance, the route reaches the Wanna balancing reservoir, which lies immediately beside the trail. Beyond it, the route climbs gradually across broad, open terrain, with rocky sections providing contrast.

Near Bodahora, a little over a third of the way along, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,810 m. By this stage, most of the total ascent of around 150 metres has been completed. Open terrain continues to dominate as the route turns back towards Thalkirch.

In the second half, the route descends steadily and approaches the starting point once more. Shortly before the end, it reaches its lowest point at around 1,680 m. The final metres lead back to Turrahus, where the winter hike ends after a little over two hours, directly at the bus stop of the same name.
