01/ Overview
The route
On the sunlit side of the Rheinwald massif, the Roman Trail links the villages of Splügen and Sufers. Along the way: lovely views of various peaks and – after traversing the snowclad fairytale forest – Lake Sufers, almost entirely frozen over.
From the Splügen, Dorf bus stop, the winter hike initially leads through the village. It briefly follows the Hinterrhein and passes the listed Reformed Church of Splügen. It then leaves the houses behind and climbs across open ground towards the valley slope.
After just over two kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,520 m. The Rundhorn is the nearest peak above, while the trail continues between meadows and woodland towards Sufers. With only around 120 metres of ascent, the elevation profile remains gentle; beyond the high point, the route descends gradually for the most part. Farther down, views open up over Sufnersee, a reservoir near Sufers, although the route does not lead all the way to the shore.
Towards the end, the first houses of Sufers come into view. The winter hike ends after around five kilometres and just over an hour and a half near the Sufers, Dorf bus stop.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
