Dreiland-Wanderweg, Stage 2/3

Affording panoramic views of Basel, the path leads over the hills of St. Chrischona and Obertüllingen and through wine-growing areas alternating between unspoilt landscapes. Next: the village of Ötlingen with its 16th and 17th century buildings and the wine-growing village of Haltingen, surrounded by the marshalling yard and Leopoldshöhe.

It is only a few minutes from the Riehen, Hörnli Grenze stop to the starting point. The trail leaves the houses behind and climbs across open meadows and through woodland onto the Dinkelberg. After just over five kilometres, the route reaches its highest point near St. Chrischona at around 514 metres. Basel’s local mountain rises a short distance away; close to the trail stands the Reformed Chrischona Church, whose location at 522 metres is also the highest point in the canton of Basel-Stadt.

The trail then continues through the forest. At Rotengraben, there is a fire pit directly beside the route. Later, the first houses reappear, and at Naturbad Riehen the trail passes close to the bathing area. It continues between meadows, woodland edges and the outskirts of residential areas before crossing the border into Germany.

After around 19 kilometres and just over five hours, the hike ends in Haltingen. The destination is not directly served by public transport; the nearest indicated stop, Basel, Weil am Rhein Grenze, is around three kilometres away.
