01/ Overview

The route

The departure point for this route is the Badische Bahnhof railway station in Basel. The Lange Erlen wildlife park, the Dammweg along the river and the open landscape in Riehen ensure a varied and unforgettable tour.

The five-kilometre walk begins at the Basel Badischer Bahnhof stop on the eastern edge of the city. Initially, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads through the neighbourhoods around the station and past the Zytigs-Stübli. The houses soon give way to open meadows, lending the short, almost level route a surprisingly green character. With no significant ascent, the trail continues towards Spittelmatthof.

Beyond the open countryside, the trail enters the forest. Alternating between open woodland edges and shady sections, it heads eastwards, with the Schliessi lying directly on the route. The Entenweiher, by contrast, is slightly off the trail.

Approaching Riehen, the houses become denser again. The trail rises almost imperceptibly, reaching both its destination and its highest point at around 280 m. Close to the finish stands Riehen village church, marking the historic village centre. After a little over an hour, the walk ends at the Riehen, Dorf stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
