01/ Overview

The route

Seize the opportunity to glide just once along Switzerland’s most famous 42 km of cross-country skiing trails, without any of the stress of competition and ahead of the major sporting event in March. The Engadin’s marathon trail is prepared daily and ready to use by anyone. All that’s required is sufficient snow and frozen lakes.

The start of the cross-country ski trail is quickly reached from the Maloja, Capolago bus stop. At Capolago, the Lej da Segl comes into view; the route follows its shore to Sils Maria. It then continues alongside the Lej da Silvaplauna. Near Surlej, Schloss Crap da Sass stands close to the trail, followed shortly afterwards by the Lej da Champfèr.

Beyond Champfèr, the trail passes the small Lej Marsch and climbs to its highest point near La Crasta at around 1,840 m. At the Lej da Staz, the Stazerwald extends close to the water. The long route then turns down the valley and once again reaches broad, open terrain.

At the artificial Lej da Gravatscha, the trail runs directly beside the water. It continues via La Punt Chamues-ch to S-chanf. After around 44 km and a good ten hours, the trail ends at the shooting range; the S-chanf, Zielgelände ESM stop is just a few steps away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
