01/ Overview

The route

Located in the heart of the idyllic mountain village of Bivio, this leisurely trail runs in a flat loop over the Gravella plain and along the Julia river.

The start of this short cross-country skiing loop is just a few steps from the Bivio, posta bus stop. The trail leaves the houses of Bivio behind and initially crosses open terrain. For the first 400 metres or so, it follows the Gelgia; the river gives this flat opening section a clear line. With only around ten metres of elevation gain, the profile remains exceptionally gentle.

About halfway round, the loop reaches its highest point at around 1'770 m. Motta Balotta lies just over 300 metres away and is therefore not visited. The trail then turns back towards Bivio. At the edge of the village, the houses come back into view; the listed Reformed church stands a little way off the route. After a total of around one kilometre and about 15 minutes, the loop closes back at the starting point in Bivio.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
