01/ Overview
The route
Above the car-free sun terrace Melchsee-Frutt, the snowshoe trail on the Gumm promises magnificent views of the Central Swiss and Bernese Alps.
The snowshoe tour starts near the first houses at Melchsee-Frutt mountain station. After a short descent, the route leads to Melchsee, a mountain lake at 1'893 m held back by an artificial dam. The Fruttkapelle, built between 1899 and 1900, stands directly on the shore.
The high plateau now opens out. The route climbs steadily across broad slopes, reaching its highest point at around 2'140 m after just over a quarter of the distance. The circuit then continues through open terrain, with a lengthy series of ascents and descents, to Tannalp. Passing the Tannalpkapelle, it leads to the Berggasthaus Tannalp.
From there, the route continues to Tannensee, a reservoir whose water is used to generate electricity. The circuit then turns back towards Melchsee-Frutt. The open high plateau also characterises the return leg; towards the end, Melchsee and the village houses come back into view. After a little over five and a half hours, the snowshoe tour ends at the mountain station.
