01/ Overview
The route
A sustained snowshoe ascent through the Gersauer Alpen: the Feissenboden Trail climbs across open slopes to Rigi Burggeist, accompanied by the Rigi Hochflue and views of Lake Lucerne.
From the Gersau, Ober Gschwend bus stop, it is only a few steps to the Obergschwend car park, where the Feissenboden Trail begins. Following the snowshoe waymarkers, the route climbs through the Gersauer Alpen. It leads via Feissenboden to Nüden and Obnüden, gaining around 550 metres in elevation over just under four kilometres. The terrain remains largely open, with the climb setting the pace.
Higher up, the Höcheli draws closer. The Rigi Hochflue towers above the route, while views open up across the slopes to Lake Lucerne and as far as the Bernese Alps. Almost all the elevation gain is tackled on the ascent; only shortly before the destination does the trail level out slightly.
After around two and a half hours, the highest point is reached at Rigi Burggeist, at an elevation of around 1,550 m. Right beside it stands the Berggasthaus Rigi Burggeist, where Gersau cheese tart is listed as a speciality. The trail ends at the nearby Burggeist station; from here, the cable car descends to Obergschwend.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
