01/ Overview

The route

This sunny winter outing in the Finsterwald forest is perfect for those seeking peace and quiet in the midst of the Entlebuch moorland scenery. You'll pass a drilling platform (an industrial monument) and enjoy an impressive backdrop featuring the Schimbrig and the Fürstein.

From the Finsterwald LU, Kirche bus stop, it is only a few steps to the starting point in the village. The winter hike soon leaves the houses behind and heads out across the open meadows and pastures above Finsterwald. Along the five-kilometre circuit, short sections through settlements alternate with wide, open terrain; the ascent remains manageable at around 130 metres of elevation gain.

The route sweeps in a wide arc towards its highest point at just under 1'170 m, near the Wissenegg. The summit itself, however, lies off the winter hiking trail. The circuit then descends again towards the village. With no major climbs, it leads back to Finsterwald between open expanses and houses.

After a good hour and a half, the circuit returns to the starting point in Finsterwald. The Finsterwald LU, Kirche bus stop is once again only around 90 metres away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
