01/ Overview

The route

Sunny trail with a steady climb, followed by a somewhat steeper descent. Your efforts will be rewarded with majestic views of two valleys and the peaks of the high-Alpine UNESCO landscape. At the halfway point, you’ll have a chance to stop at a mountain restaurant for a well-deserved break.

From the Bellwald stop (Richinen valley station), it is only a few steps to the starting point at Bellwald, Gasse. The snowshoe route initially climbs between the houses before soon entering the forest. It continues uphill for some time, with around 460 metres of elevation to be gained in total. Higher up, the forest begins to thin, and open slopes characterise the route past Hasestall.

Shortly afterwards, the circuit reaches its highest point at just over 2,060 m, with the Risihorn the nearest summit. The route now turns downhill and leads across open terrain back towards Bellwald. After the long descent, the first houses draw closer again. By the Sport Restaurant, the starting point is already almost reached. A little later, the six-kilometre circuit closes back at Bellwald, Gasse, after just over three hours.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
