01/ Overview
The route
It is obvious why this trail is so popular: It is easy, well marked and the 4000-meter peaks of the Valais are always in sight. The peaceful hamlet of Flesch with Valais-style chalets followed by a lovely forest near the Aletschpromenade is also very appealing.
From the Bettmeralp stop, the snowshoe trail initially winds between the houses. The route soon climbs steeply across open terrain. After just under one kilometre, it reaches its highest point at around 2,050 m, near the Sparrhorn.
The circuit then descends again, alternating between open slopes and forest. Around halfway, it passes directly by the chapel of St. Bernhard; the Bergdohle lies a little off the route. The trail then continues downhill to its lowest point at just over 1,840 m.
For the return leg, the route turns uphill again. A gentle series of ascents and descents crosses more open ground and stretches of forest before the first houses of Bettmeralp come into view. After just over two hours and a total ascent of around 260 metres, the snowshoe trail ends back at the Bettmeralp stop.
