01/ Overview

The route

The easy snowshoe tour on Pilatus leads from Fräkmüntegg over open meadows of Alp Bonern and back through the «Rehlöcher» forest. During the hike you cross the border from Lucerne to Nidwalden and enjoy a beautiful view of Lucerne, Lake Lucerne, the midland and the northern foothills of the Alps.

The short snowshoe circuit on Pilatus begins at Fräkmüntegg station. Right at the start, the route climbs to its highest point at around 1,440 m. It then heads mostly downhill through the forest, descending just over 150 metres in elevation over the first kilometre and a half. The Klimsenhorn lies away from the circuit, remaining a nearby peak of the Pilatus massif.

From the lowest point at around 1,290 m, the route climbs again. Alternating between forest and open terrain, it also skirts wet meadows before the return leg turns more directly towards Fräkmüntegg. Shortly before the finish, the route reaches Bielilücke. From there, it is only a short distance back to Fräkmüntegg; after a total of around three kilometres and just under two hours, the snowshoe tour ends back at the station.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
