01/ Overview

The route

This moderately challenging snowshoe trail surrounded by pristine nature offers stunning views into the Engelberg Valley, away from the hustle and bustle. It leads from the Maria-Rickenbach pilgrimage site with its famous monastery mainly through the forest and across meadows.

The snowshoe tour begins directly at the Niederrickenbach Dorf stop. From among the houses, the circular route leads to the Chapel of Hl. Maria im Ahorn, just a few steps off the trail. The village is then left behind as the ascent continues into open terrain. Across meadows and pastures, the five-kilometre route gains a total of around 240 metres in elevation.

After just over two kilometres, the highest point is reached at around 1'370 m. The route then heads back down into the valley. Meadows, pastures and open terrain also characterise the return journey. The route gradually loses elevation on the descent before the first houses of Niederrickenbach draw closer. After just over two hours and a total of around five kilometres, the loop closes back at the Niederrickenbach Dorf stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
