01/ Overview

The route

From the pilgrimage site of Heiligkreuz, the snowshoe trail climbs over open slopes to Kleine First and continues to the First mountain restaurant. The steep final ascent takes the route to around 1,430 m.

The snowshoe trail starts in Heiligkreuz, directly by the Hasle LU, Heiligkreuz Kirche bus stop. Heiligkreuz can be reached by PostBus from Schüpfheim. Close to the starting point stands the pilgrimage church, whose history dates back to the late Middle Ages. It is one of the cultural sites of national importance in the canton of Lucerne. The Kurhaus Heiligkreuz is also not far from the start, before the route leaves the houses behind.

Part of the ascent follows the Wurzilla Fairy-Tale Trail. The snowshoe trail then crosses the sunny north-facing slope to Kleine First. It climbs from the outset, gaining around 300 metres in elevation over just under two and a half kilometres; towards the end, the gradient becomes considerably steeper. After just over an hour, the highest point at around 1,430 m is reached at the First mountain restaurant. The route ends here; the nearest public transport stop, Heiligkreuz Witebach, is just under one kilometre away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
