Fribourg en diagonale, Stage 3/3

Start in beautifully-conserved, historic Fribourg; off the major traffic routes, through peaceful cultured landscape to the lake shore. Sightseeing attractions along the way: Greng (18th century castle) and a little further on, the obelisk commemorating the Battle of Murten.

From Fribourg/Freiburg railway station, the waymarked hiking trail initially leads out of the city. Before long, the Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Faye stands directly beside the route, after which open meadows and small settlements set the tone. Via La Sonnaz and La Corbaz, the trail climbs towards the Bois de l’Hôpital. Shortly after entering the forest, the hike reaches its highest point at around 700 metres.

The terrain then becomes gentler. Stretches of woodland alternate with open cultivated countryside, and the Ruisseau de la Crausa accompanies the route for a while. Just past the halfway point, the trail passes the church of Saint-Sébastien and later continues through the Bois du Marais. This long middle section is characterised by an alternation of fields, woodland and villages.

At Greng, the Murtensee comes into view. The route continues via Meyriez to Murten, where the hike ends near Murten/Morat railway station. A little over five and a half hours should be allowed for the 23 kilometres; the generally moderate trail demands stamina above all.
