01/ Overview
The route
The city of Fribourg, with its numerous historical references to James the Great, is worth a trip in its own right. The pilgrims’ way crosses the Sainte-Apolline bridge, passing through the diverse landscape of the Glâne district and continuing on to Romont. Glass is very important in this part of Switzerland.
The approximately 27-kilometre hike begins at Fribourg/Freiburg railway station. The trail leads through the city and Villars-sur-Glâne before reaching the Glâne. Beside the bridge stands the Sainte-Apolline chapel, which lies on the Swiss Way of St James; both the chapel and the bridge are cultural properties of national significance.
The route then enters the Bois de Monterban. Woodland, open meadows and the villages of Posieux and Ecuvillens soon alternate. The Glâne remains a companion for long stretches. With no major climbs, the route winds through the gentle Fribourg countryside, punctuated by short ascents and the houses of Autigny.
In the final third, the terrain opens up again. Via La Longeraie and Chavannes-sous-Romont, the trail approaches Romont and passes the Abbaye de la Fille Dieu. The final ascent leads to the hike’s highest point at around 780 metres. After approximately seven hours, the hike ends in Romont, a few steps from the Romont FR, école primaire bus stop.
