01/ Overview

The route

From the Glaubenberg moorland to the Fürstein: this scenic summit circuit climbs via Obersewen to just over 2,000 m and returns to the Stäldeli alpine restaurant on a steep, at times pathless descent.

The circular hike begins at the car park by the Stäldeli alpine restaurant, away from public transport; the nearest stop, Flühli LU, Hüttlenen, is just over three kilometres away. The hiking trail climbs across open pastures towards Obersewen. There, the chapel stands close to the route, while the Seewenseeli lies a little off the trail. As the route gains height, the Glaubenberg moorland increasingly shapes the landscape, set within the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch and Obwalden.

The mountain trail then climbs more steeply towards the Fürstein. Standing on the cantonal border between Lucerne and Obwalden, the summit is the highest in the region around the Glaubenberg Pass. At just over 2,000 m, the panoramic views extend as far as Pilatus and the Bernese Alps.

The descent via Wasserfallenegg and Änggelauene is steep, at times pathless, and requires surefootedness and hiking experience. In the Glaubenberg and Wasserfallen military training areas, closures during firing exercises must be strictly observed. The circuit finally returns across alpine pastures to the car park by the Stäldeli alpine restaurant.

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
