01/ Overview

The route

A winter wonderland to avoid crowds: On the way to the Susten Pass, the village of Gadmen tempts visitors with its guaranteed snow cover and a quiet cross-country skiing trail that’s never short of sunshine. It follows the Gadmen river and offers panoramic views of Mount Titlis and the Fünffingerstöck.

From the Gadmen, Post bus stop, the nine-kilometre trail initially descends gently through the valley. Open meadows characterise the first section, interspersed with wooded slopes that draw closer to the track. After around three kilometres, the houses of Fuhren are reached, along with the lowest point of the circuit at just over 1'130 m.

The route now turns uphill again. The longer ascent leads through open terrain and short stretches of woodland to the highest point at around 1'230 m, not far from Wanghoren. The circuit involves a total ascent of about 200 metres. The trail then descends towards Obermad, where isolated houses once again appear on the valley floor. The final kilometres, with a few short counter-climbs, lead back to Gadmen. After just over two and a half hours, the circuit ends near the Gadmen, Post bus stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
