01/ Overview

The route

Perfect for cross-country beginners: anyone who prefers a simple run without climbs or descents will definitely like the circuit next to the frozen Melchsee.

From the Distelboden stop, it is only a few steps to the start in Melchsee-Frutt. The two-kilometre trail initially runs right alongside Melchsee. Situated at 1'893 m, the mountain lake is held back by an artificial dam and gave the village its name. Damp meadows and open terrain characterise the broad plateau all around.

The lowest point of the circuit is at Balmeregg. The trail then climbs gently, reaching its highest point near Melchseestock at around 1'910 m. Overall, the differences in elevation remain modest, with around 20 metres of ascent and descent respectively. A little off the route stands the Frutt Chapel, which was built around 1900. The trail leads back across the open terrain to Melchsee-Frutt and ends once again near the Distelboden stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
