01/ Overview

The route

The run to Tannalp passes over undulating terrain and has a relatively good guarantee of snow due to its altitude. In addition to the view of the Obwalden mountain peaks, it is also fascinating to see the ice fishers along the route.

The twelve-kilometre cross-country ski trail starts at the Melchsee-Frutt, Panoramalift stop, with no lengthy approach. It crosses the open plateau and initially climbs towards Tannensee. At the dammed mountain lake, the water comes close to the trail; the route then continues across expansive alpine pastures to the Tannalp mountain inn.

The steepest climb follows beyond Tannalp. After just over four kilometres, the trail reaches its highest point near Spycherflue at around 2,020 m. It then loses some elevation again and passes the Tannalp chapel. Open terrain continues to dominate the landscape, interspersed with wet meadows and shallow hollows.

On the return leg, gentle climbs alternate with longer gliding sections, with around 280 metres of ascent in total. Towards the end, the trail descends to just under 1,900 m and returns to Melchsee-Frutt after a little over three hours. It then follows the shore of Melchsee back to the Panoramalift.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
