01/ Overview
The route
Horse farms, Kastelen castle ruins and the Planet Trail characterise this easy hike through the Lucerne hinterland. Towards the end, the route follows the Wigger to Willisau.
From Gettnau railway station, the route leads out of the village to meadows and horse farms. After the Wannern riding stables, it follows a narrow path through the forest and climbs to Kastelen castle ruins. The castle, built by the Counts of Kyburg in the 13th century, marks the highest point at around 640 metres. The accessible observation tower offers views across the Lucerne hinterland.
From the castle hill, the route descends to Burgrain, where organic farming and agricultural heritage shape the next section. The attractions here include Agrovision Burgrain and the Swiss Museum of Agriculture; there is also an organic farm with a restaurant, farm shop and large playground. The route then reaches the valley floor and turns west via Wydenmühle.
For the final third, the hiking trail follows the Wigger. The Planet Trail points the way towards Willisau, while open fields alternate with short stretches of woodland. After almost eight kilometres and around two hours, the first houses of Willisau come into view; shortly afterwards, the route ends at Willisau railway station.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
