01/ Overview
The route
This scenic circular hike from Willisau’s old town links chapels, woodland and open hills. Via Vorberg and Gütsch, it returns to the streets of the small town in around two and a half hours.
The circular hike begins in the old town of Willisau, just a few steps from the Friedhof bus stop. At the St. Niklaus chapel, it leaves the houses behind and heads towards the Tälenbach. The trail climbs between meadows and woodland via Vorberg, alternating between waymarked hiking trails and longer sections outside the signposted network.
At Vorberg-Schlössli, the ascent continues via Hirseren. After around three kilometres, the highest point is reached near Salberig at an elevation of about 740 m. The route now descends through open hills to Eimatt and onwards to Grundmühle. Sections of woodland punctuate the trail, while pastures in between open up views across the hills surrounding Willisau.
From Gulphöchi, the route climbs gently once more to Gütsch, the hike’s viewpoint. It then returns to the built-up area via Hischpark. The Heiligblut church stands directly beside the route; a few steps later, the circuit is completed at Zehntenplatz in Willisau’s old town.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
