01/ Overview
The route
Engelberg’s Grotto Trail leads to the «End of the World». This high-altitude path takes walkers through a snowy landscape with views of Engelberg, past the famous «seven springs», and on to the Lourdes grotto and Horbis.
The signposted winter hike begins at Engelberg railway station. It initially leads through the village, passing close to the monastery church. Before long, the houses are left behind and the route climbs gently towards the edge of the forest, with views across the open meadows. The six-kilometre route involves a total ascent of around 170 metres.
The Lourdes Grotto lies directly on the route in the forest. Open areas and wooded sections then alternate. In Horbis, the trail follows the Bärenbach for a short stretch to the Marienkapelle. Here, below Chli Gemsispil, the circuit reaches its highest point at around 1,130 m, roughly halfway along the route.
The winter hike then leads back downhill. Between meadows and forest, views open up back towards Engelberg before the first houses are reached. The route continues through the village and returns to the starting point at Engelberg railway station.
