01/ Overview
The route
The winter hiking trail from the car-free upland plateau of Melchsee-Frutt to Tannalp passes through glittering winter landscapes. There are two picturesque chapels and lakes along the wayside.
The winter hike starts at the Melchsee-Frutt upper station, in the heart of the small mountain village. Before long, the route leads out to the shore of Melchsee, a mountain lake at 1,893 m. Right beside it stands the Fruttkapelle, built between 1899 and 1900. Beyond this point, the houses give way to the broad, open high valley.
Climbing gently, the winter hiking trail crosses the high plateau to Tannalp. By the time it reaches the Tannalpkapelle and Berggasthaus Tannalp, around half of the circuit has been completed. Shortly afterwards, the route reaches its highest point near the Türmli at just under 2,000 m. With a total ascent of around 240 metres, the climb remains manageable.
On the return leg, the route passes directly beside Tannensee. This lake is also dammed and used to generate electricity. The trail leads across open terrain back to Melchsee and the first houses of Melchsee-Frutt. After around nine kilometres and just over three hours, the circuit ends back at the upper station.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
