01/ Overview
The route
A legendary trail on Switzerland's largest alp: the Urnerboden cross-country ski trail, a.k.a. «Gulispur», is sure to have snow due to its shadowed location at 1,400 metres. The trail gets its nickname from a fat Glarus rooster.
The trail begins on the Urnerboden, around 300 metres from the Urnerboden, Dorf bus stop. The ten-kilometre circuit remains on the broad valley floor, crossing open pastureland and passing wet meadows. The elevation profile is gentle: at first, the trail gradually descends to the lowest point of the circuit without leaving the open landscape.
It then begins to climb gently again. Shortly before the village, the Klause Ranch stands directly beside the route. From there, the trail continues between the first houses of Urnerboden; the St. Erhard chapel stands a little way off. After a little over two and a half hours, the circuit closes at the starting point. This is also its highest point, at around 1,360 m; the bus stop is once again just over 300 metres away.
