01/ Overview
The route
Certain to have snow, surrounded by towering three-thousand metre peaks, and leading through picturesque woodland: the Unterschächnen cross-country ski trail is a real insider's tip. A demandingly contoured section plus a flat section make the circuit along the village a highly varied route.
From the Unterschächen, Dorf bus stop, it is just under 200 metres to the cross-country skiing centre on the edge of the village. This is where the approximately six-kilometre trail begins. It quickly leaves the houses behind and crosses open meadows, alternating between short climbs and gentler sections. The circuit involves around 140 metres of ascent in total and takes just over one hour and 40 minutes.
Beyond the halfway point, the trail climbs once more, reaching its highest point near Chulm at around 1'050 m. The circuit then descends again towards Unterschächen. Open terrain continues to predominate at first, with the village houses drawing closer only towards the end. In the village, the circuit finally closes at the cross-country skiing centre, where it began.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
