01/ Overview
The route
A short circular cross-country ski trail across the open Gitschenen plateau, accompanied by panoramic views between Uri-Rotstock and Brisen. Gentle changes in elevation and an optional shortcut characterise the 2.6-kilometre circuit.
The St. Jakob–Alp Gitschenen cable car carries cross-country skiers up to Gitschenen. From the mountain station, a short walk leads to the start of the approximately 2.6 km circular trail. It crosses open, largely flat terrain beside the ski lift and reaches its highest point, at just under 1,570 m, within the first quarter of the route.
The trail then makes a broad loop across the plateau. The panorama takes in Uri-Rotstock, Brisen, Schlieren and Sassigrat, with Älpler also nearby. An optional shortcut allows for an even shorter circuit. After a gentle descent, the lowest point is reached in the second half of the route before the trail climbs slightly and approaches Gitschenen once more. The Betrufkapelle and Alpstubli Gitschenen are located close to the trail. The route finishes back at Gitschenen mountain station.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
