01/ Overview
The route
The king’s stage over the 2778m-high Hohtürli. Rewarding detour to the Blümlisalphütte and eternal glacier ice. Down over moraine to beautiful, deep-blue Oeschinensee backed by steep cliffs; one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the Alps.
From the Griesalp, Kurhaus bus stop, the trail initially crosses meadows to Bundalp and passes the mountain inn. The broad hiking trail then becomes a mountain path, climbing in long switchbacks through open terrain and increasingly rocky slopes. Shortly before Hohtürli, the route reaches its highest point at around 2,790 m. A little later, the 2,778 m pass is reached, linking Kiental and Kandersteg.
Beyond the pass, the long descent begins. The mountain path leads down through barren rocky terrain to the alpine pastures, passing directly by Oberbärgli. Farther down, open slopes alternate with woodland until Oeschinensee is reached at around 1,580 m. The mountain lake forms part of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau–Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its shore lies directly on the route.
From the lake, the final section follows a hiking trail down into the valley. After the long descent, the first houses of Kandersteg come into view; the hike ends at the railway station.
