01/ Overview
The route
Four very varied days in the Lötschberg region. Sniff railway aromas high above the Kandertal, experience the rugged Gasteretal with all your senses. After crossing the Lötschengletscher (glacier), classic panoramic hike on the Lötschentaler Höhenweg.
From the Kiental, Ramslauenen bus stop, the hiking trail climbs via Ramslauenen. In a long series of ups and downs, it winds through meadows, pastures and forest towards Kandersteg. The houses are soon left behind as the route enters the Gasterntal.
Near Waldhaus, it follows the Schwarzbach for a short while. The valley then becomes rockier and the ascent more sustained. Higher up, the broad hiking trail gives way to a steeper mountain path. It leads through open terrain and across scree to the Lötschenpass, at around 2,690 m the highest point of the tour. Accessible only on foot, the pass links the Gasterntal in the Bernese Oberland with Ferden in Valais.
Beyond the pass, the route initially remains amid rock and scree as it traverses towards Sattlegi. It then descends considerably; alpine pastures and the first houses replace the high-mountain landscape. The trail passes the Niklaus von Flüe chapel on the way to Tellialp, before later returning to the forest. Shortly before the destination, the Chapel of St Bernard stands beside the trail, before the tour ends at the Fafleralp bus stop.
