01/ Overview
The route
A short winter circuit from Rigi Kaltbad to Känzeli, with gentle elevation gain, wintry woodland and sweeping views across the lake to Lucerne and the Alps.
The winter hike begins in the heart of Rigi Kaltbad at the Rigi Kaltbad-First stop. The village can be reached by cogwheel railway from Vitznau or by cable car from Weggis. Near Rigi Stübli, the short circuit leaves the houses behind and climbs gently across open terrain.
Around halfway along the route lies Känzeli at approximately 1'460 m, also the highest point of the hike. From here, the view opens up across the lake to Lucerne and the Alps. Queen Victoria visited the viewpoint as early as 1868. The trail then leads through wintry woodland back towards Rigi Kaltbad.
Shortly before the finish, the St. Michael rock chapel stands directly beside the route. According to legend, the Roman Catholic chapel became a popular pilgrimage site. Together with the Kaltbad spring, which attracted visitors as early as the 16th century, it recalls the early spa culture on the Rigi. Passing the first houses, the circuit ends back at the Rigi Kaltbad-First stop.

How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
