01/ Overview
The route
Short winter hike from Rigi Staffel via the Rotstock to Rigi First, with sweeping Alpine views and a panorama down to the cross-shaped basin of Lake Lucerne.
The cogwheel railway from Vitznau or Goldau takes winter hikers to Rigi Staffel, where the Rotstock Trail begins directly by the station. Nearby is Restaurant Lok 7, with views extending as far as the Black Forest. The route initially crosses open slopes and climbs, with a few short counter-ascents, towards Rigi Rotstock. Near the summit, it reaches its highest point at around 1,650 m.
The trail then descends noticeably towards Rigi First. Across the open terrain, the panorama takes in the Alps and Lake Lucerne; particularly striking is the view down to its cross-shaped basin. The winter hike is just over two kilometres long and takes just under an hour, with the route mostly descending after the Rotstock. Towards the end, the houses of Rigi First draw closer. The Bärenstube lies near the route, and shortly afterwards the Rotstock Trail ends at Rigi First.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
