01/ Overview
The route
A short winter hike along a former railway line: from panoramic Rigi Kaltbad via Rigi First and the Heiri-Hütte down to the pilgrimage chapel in Rigi Klösterli.
The winter hike begins at Rigi Kaltbad-First station in Rigi Kaltbad, which can be reached by cogwheel railway from Vitznau or by cable car from Weggis. The route initially follows the former railway track on an almost level course. Between the houses, views open up over Lake Lucerne and the Alpine peaks.
The highest point, at around 1,450 m, is near Rigi First. The trail then turns distinctly downhill, crossing open terrain and passing the Heiri-Hütte. Over the route of just over two kilometres, only a little more than 30 metres of elevation are gained, while the descent amounts to around 150 metres.
On the lower section, the houses of Rigi Klösterli draw closer. The pilgrimage chapel of Maria zum Schnee stands directly beside the route; the hamlet was once home to Capuchin monks. For the return journey, the cogwheel railway runs to Goldau. After around 45 minutes, the winter hike ends at Rigi Klösterli station.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
