01/ Overview
The route
A short, demanding winter ascent from Rigi Klösterli to Rigi Kulm: across open slopes, past Alp Chäserenholz and up to sweeping views over the Swiss Plateau and the Alps.
The Rigi Railway reaches the starting point at Rigi Klösterli via Goldau. From the stop, the winter hike begins directly beside the Baroque chapel of Maria zum Schnee. Shortly afterwards, the route follows the Rigiaa before climbing steadily across open slopes towards Untere Schwändihütte and Schwändi. Around 470 metres of elevation are gained in just three and a half kilometres; a little over an hour and a half should be allowed for the route.
Higher up, the signposted winter hiking trail leads to Alp Chäserenholz. The mountain inn is known for its tangy Rigi cheese; whether it is open in winter must be checked in advance. Beyond it, the slope remains open and the view broadens across the Swiss Plateau to the Alps. The final ascent ends at Rigi Kulm at around 1,750 m, the highest point on this route. The destination at Rigi Kulm is just under 100 m from the railway station of the same name.

How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
