01/ Overview
The route
Following a former railway line, this short winter hiking trail leads from Rigi Kaltbad to Wölfertschen First. Views of Lake Lucerne, the Alps and both Mythen accompany the gentle ascent across open terrain and through sparse mountain forest.
The winter hike begins at Rigi Kaltbad-First station, following the former railway line. Rigi Kaltbad can be reached by cogwheel railway from Vitznau or by cable car from Weggis. The Wölfertschen Trail climbs almost imperceptibly and soon leaves the houses behind. Along the broad trail, open terrain alternates with sparse mountain forest. Views repeatedly open up to Lake Lucerne far below, while the Alpine panorama is outlined on the southern horizon. Around 30 minutes should be allowed for the route of just over two kilometres.
After around one kilometre, the route reaches Rigi First. The Bärenstube stands directly beside the trail here. The winter hike continues gently uphill, with views of both Mythen. The highest point, at around 1,480 m, is reached only shortly before the destination. A few steps later, the Wölfertschen Trail ends at Rigi Wölfertschen-First station.

How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
