01/ Overview
The route
This easy high-altitude walk on the queen of mountains features magnificent views out over the Swiss plateau to the Black Forest, the Vosges mountains and the Alps, as well as a breath-taking bird’s-eye view of Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug.
The winter hike begins on the open heights at Rigi Kulm railway station. At around 1,750 m, the route’s highest point comes right at the start; from then on, the trail leads almost entirely downhill. After just a few steps, the Regina Montium mountain chapel appears beside the trail. The route continues across open slopes towards Rigi Rotstock, while the rocky summit itself remains slightly off the trail.
About halfway along, the trail passes the Regina Montium mountain inn. The gentle descent then continues to Känzeli, a striking viewpoint directly on the route. Towards the end, the first houses of Rigi Kaltbad draw closer. The rock chapel of St. Michael stands immediately beside the trail; it is one of Weggis’s protected cultural assets and is known as a place of pilgrimage. A little later, the winter hike of just over an hour ends at the Rigi Kaltbad-First stop.
