01/ Overview
The route
The mountain village of Lauenen is set between Gstaad and the majestic Wildhorn. From here you walk up to the much-praised Lake Lauenen. This hiking route is renowned for its silence and seclusion.
The winter hike starts near the village at the Lauenen b. Gstaad, Rohrbrücke bus stop. The trail follows the Louwibach upstream, gaining altitude steadily over the first two kilometres. The highest point of the circuit lies at around 1'410 m, amid open meadows and stretches of woodland. The gradient then eases as the trail continues towards the head of the valley.
After just over an hour, the route reaches the natural Lauenensee at just under 1'380 m. Close to the shore, woodland, open ground and wet meadows meet. The return route again follows the Louwibach, initially almost level and later on a gentle descent. The valley repeatedly opens up between the trees before the first houses of Lauenen come into view. After around nine kilometres and just under three hours, the circuit ends back at the Lauenen b. Gstaad, Rohrbrücke bus stop.
