01/ Overview

The route

This continual downhill run from Schönried to Gstaad and varied hike for enthusiastic hikers boasts views of towering mountain peaks, idyllic meadows and the historic heart of the Saanenland.

The winter hike, around five kilometres long, begins at Schönried railway station. The route starts with a short climb, reaching its highest point at 1,231 m. From there, it is mostly downhill, leading quietly away from the village across open meadows and pastures, with only a few gentle uphill sections that make little difference overall.

In the second half, the descent continues towards Gstaad. The open countryside gradually gives way to the first houses as the route enters the built-up area. Close to the trail stands the Catholic Church of St Josef, built between 1927 and 1930. Shortly afterwards, Restaurant Mango lies directly on the route. The final section leads through Gstaad and continues downhill to the railway station. After just under an hour and a half, the winter hike ends at Gstaad railway station.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
