Lauterbrunnen-Loipe

Cross-country skiing in the valley with 72 waterfalls, surrounded by several peaks over three or four thousand metres high. The trail runs along the White Lütschine from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg, past the Trümmelbach Falls, the biggest underground waterfalls in Europe.

The roughly twelve-kilometre cross-country ski trail begins near the Lauterbrunnen, Schützenbach stop. Above the village, the 297-metre Staubbach Falls plunge from the left side of the valley; rising air disperses the water into spray, giving the waterfall its name. The route soon leaves the houses behind and heads up the valley across open meadows.

Passing Trümmelbach and Sandbach, the trail climbs only gradually. The valley’s high, rocky flanks remain a constant presence, while the broad valley floor provides a sense of spaciousness. At Stechelberg, around halfway along the route, the upper part of the valley is reached. Shortly afterwards, the trail reaches its highest point at around 900 m.

The second half descends gently again. A few houses come into view near Lengwald, after which open ground alternates with short inhabited sections. With no major counter-climbs, the trail continues along the valley floor and ends in Stechelberg after just over three hours.
