01/ Overview
The route
A challenging, but beautifully situated cross-country ski trail in the rolling terrain near Ftan. The trail leads around Muot Pednal over varied terrain and offers gorgeous views of the Lower Engadin Dolomites.
The cross-country ski circuit begins in Ftan Grond; the nearest stop, Ftan, Institut, is just over 300 m from the trailhead. Beyond the houses, the trail heads towards Paradies and out across open meadows and pastures. The Reformed church stands slightly apart from the rest of the village. Views remain expansive as the route gradually gains elevation through several climbs. Over the first few kilometres, the circuit alternates between the edge of the village and open slopes.
In the middle section, the longest climb demands some stamina. After a total ascent of around 260 metres, the trail reaches its highest point at approximately 1,700 m, with Muot Padnal nearby. It then descends across the open slopes towards Ftan. Short counter-climbs interrupt the descent and keep the rhythm varied. Towards the end, the houses of Ftan Grond reappear. After a little over two hours, the seven-kilometre circuit ends at the starting point; the Ftan, Institut stop is again just over 300 m away.

How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
