01/ Overview
The route
Cross-country skiing in the upper Emmental surrounded by unspoiled hills. Lined with wooded slopes, this flat trail winds its way along the valley floor between Langnau and Trubschachen, following the Ilfis river. Impressive Emmental farmhouses are dotted along both sides of the cross-country skiing trail.
From the BĂ€rau, Schwimmbad bus stop, it is around 150 m to the start by the indoor swimming pool. The eight-kilometre trail leaves the houses of BĂ€rau behind and heads out across open meadows and fields. Beyond Schilfacher, the profile remains gentle, with a total elevation gain of only around 60 metres. The even course, without any notable climbs, leaves ample opportunity to take in the broad, agricultural surroundings.
The trail then sweeps through the area around Ortbach. Near Bircheneggchnubel, roughly halfway along, is the highest point at around 720 m. The route then descends gently again and heads back towards BĂ€rau. Open terrain accompanies the return as far as the first houses. After just under two hours, the circuit closes back at the indoor swimming pool in Langnau.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
