01/ Overview

The route

A short cross-country skiing circuit between Escholzmatt and Ebnet: from the village out onto open meadows, with gentle climbs and unobstructed views of the Beichlen.

The trailhead at Alpach is around 500 m from the Escholzmatt, Bahnhof stop. The circular trail, just over two and a half kilometres long, is groomed for both classic cross-country skiing and skating. It initially winds between the houses of Escholzmatt, passing St. Jakob Church, before climbing via Bühlti into open countryside. After about one kilometre, the circuit reaches its highest point near Bärgli at around 880 m. Throughout, the view of the Beichlen remains unobstructed.

The trail continues via Waldbüehlweid and Hünigerhof, gently rising and falling towards Ebnet. At Alpbach, it branches off towards Wiggen before turning back via Krummeneggmoos and Krummenegg. Towards the end, the open meadows give way to the village once more; after just over half an hour, the circuit ends at Escholzmatt railway station, only a few steps from the stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
