01/ Overview
The route
Through one of Switzerland’s largest moorland areas and an unspoilt landscape, surrounded by the Hohgant and Augstmatthorn peaks. In the distance the summits of Mount Niesen and the famous Bernese Oberland peak trio Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
The five-kilometre circular snowshoe trail begins directly at the Habkern, Lombachalp-Roteschwand bus stop. At first it descends gently into the broad landscape of the Lombachalp, before beginning to climb. Open expanses and moorland meadows dominate the scenery, and the houses are soon left behind. Allow just over two hours and around 240 metres of ascent for the circuit.
In the second section, the route continues uphill. Near the Winterröscht, it reaches its highest point at around 1,740 m, without taking in the summit some 100 m away. The circuit then loses height again and leads back across the open terrain to the Lombachalp. The loop comes full circle between moorland and gentle hilltops. The final metres lead back to the starting point at Habkern, Lombachalp-Roteschwand, directly beside the bus stop of the same name.
