Hinterburgseeli Trail

From Axalp high above Lake Brienz along a trail flanked by snow-covered wooden sculptures and storm-ravaged forests to the tiny Hinterburgseeli lake, nestled into a mystical hollow and surrounded by towering rock ledges.

From the Axalp, Sportbahnen stop, it is only a few steps to the start of the five-kilometre snowshoe loop. At the Axalp Stübli, the trail leaves the houses behind. After a short descent, it leads through forest before climbing steadily across open meadows. Just under two and a half hours are estimated for the roughly 280 metres of ascent.

After just under two kilometres, the highest point is reached at around 1,640 m. The summit of Hennefidle lies well off the loop. The route then alternates between stretches of forest and open meadows as it descends again. Roughly halfway around, it comes within about 120 m of Hinterburgseeli, although the five-hectare lake itself does not lie directly on the trail.

On the final section, the route gains height gently once more and leads back through the forest to Axalp. Among the first houses, the loop closes at the Axalp Stübli; the Axalp, Sportbahnen stop is right beside it.
