01/ Overview
The route
It doesn’t always have to be about the Eiger mountain: At the foot of Wetterhorn, this trail winds through snowy meadows and forests towards the Grosse Scheidegg pass.
From the Grindelwald, Oberer Gletscher bus stop, it is only a few steps to Hotel Wetterhorn, where the snowshoe circuit begins. The route initially climbs away from the edge of the valley. The houses are soon left behind, and open expanses dominate the scenery. The ascent continues steadily uphill for around 240 metres of elevation gain.
Just before the halfway point, the circuit reaches its highest point at around 1,440 m, near Byhorn. Shortly afterwards, it passes the Ischboden hut. The route then turns back towards the valley, losing the elevation gained across open terrain. Towards the end, the houses of Grindelwald draw closer again. After around four kilometres and just under two hours, the snowshoe tour ends at Hotel Wetterhorn, immediately beside the Grindelwald, Oberer Gletscher bus stop.
