01/ Overview

The route

A short snowshoe circuit across the open expanses of Marbachegg, with sweeping views of the Eiger, Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn and a peaceful loop to the reservoir.

The gondola carries snowshoers up to Marbachegg. The approximately 1.7 km circular trail begins right by the top station at just under 1,470 m, the highest point on the route. Berggasthaus Marbachegg stands immediately beside the starting point. Within the first few metres, panoramic views open up towards the Schreckhorn, Finsteraarhorn and Eiger.

The snowshoe trail crosses wide, open terrain towards Gassenegg, where benches offer a welcome place to rest. The circuit then descends via Unter Lochsitli to around 1,390 m. Away from the houses, the surroundings become peaceful; with a little luck, wildlife may be spotted. Dogs must be kept on a lead throughout the circuit.

At Wittenfärren, the route turns back and regains the lost elevation. The reservoir forms a striking feature in the open winter landscape before the final ascent to Marbachegg. After around 45 minutes, the snowshoe tour ends back at the top station, just a few steps from the mountain inn.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
