01/ Overview
The route
Experience winter on snowshoes in Europe's oldest wildlife conservation area: the Freiberg Kärpf. This easy tour across meadows and through forests takes you to the Mettmenalp pasture area (1,600 m.a.s.l.) with Lake Garichti.
The snowshoe tour starts at the Mettmen bus stop and climbs over open alpine pastures. Soon it passes the Bootshaus campfire site and reaches, at just over 1,626 m, the highest point below the Matzlenstock, from where a wide view opens onto the slopes of the Mettmenalp. Shortly afterwards the Garichti reservoir lies immediately beside the route; the lake, also called Mettmensee, is a reservoir on the Mettmenalp and covers around 16 hectares.
The route continues through light woodland and a few open clearings, passes the Küsnachterhaus campfire site and then turns back toward the starting point. The loop of just under 2 km involves about 80 metres of ascent and usually takes around one hour; it finishes again at the Mettmen stop in Schwanden.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
