Morteratsch-Winterwanderweg

A short trail through thousands of years of the Earth’s history. The Morteratsch Glacier Trail takes hikers along an easy path directly to the glacier tongue of the third longest glacier in the eastern Alps. An educational trail provides information on this receding glacier.

The six-kilometre winter hike begins at Morteratsch station, just a few steps from the starting point. Restaurant Morteratsch is located near the start. The route climbs gently from the valley floor. At first, rocky terrain characterises the surroundings, before the trail opens out across clear expanses. With around 150 metres of ascent, the climb remains steady and manageable.

Around halfway along, the winter route reaches its highest point at approximately 2,030 m; the nearest summit is Munt Pers. The Chünetta viewpoint lies off the route and is not passed. The trail then descends again, alternating between stony slopes and open terrain. Just under two hours should be allowed for the full circuit. After 150 metres of descent, it ends back at the starting point at Pontresina, Morteratsch, near the station.
